  7. <b>The External Tank</b>
  8. <p>
  9. The External Tank (or ET) holds the fuel used by the Space Shuttle Main Engines (the SSMEs). It contains a total of 2 million litres (539,000 gal.) of liquid fuel. All this liquid is burned by the SSMEs in the first eight minutes of flight.

  11. The ET is the only part of the Shuttle that is not reused. When all its fuel has been consumed, the tank separates from the Orbiter about 110 km (68 mi.) above the surface of the planet. It breaks apart in <a href="text">the Earth├òs upper atmosphere</a> and falls, <a href="text">burning</a>  into a remote part of the Indian Ocean.

  13. In addition to being a fuel tank, the ET is the largest single piece of the Shuttle. It serves as the backbone of the vehicle. It holds the other parts (the SRBs and the Orbiter) together prior to lift-off and during the first stage of <a href="glossary">ascent</a>.
